EMR MANAGES BUILDING COMMISSIONG PROCESS FOR DUKE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL
CENTER VIVARIUM TRANSGENIC ANIMAL RESEARCH LABORATORY
ARLINGTON, Va.
Duke University Medical Centers Vivarium Transgenic Facility,
an animal research laboratory, in Durham, North Carolina, is undergoing
major renovations to meet new ventilation standards set by the American
Laboratory Council. As part of this $1.4 million project, EMR, a Virginia-based
engineering consulting firm specializing in facilities commissioning,
operations and maintenance, is commissioning the building to certify
that the remodeled facility meets all of its design specifications.
The systems being commissioned
include a built-up air-handling unit, exhaust fans, variable speed
drives and exhaust systems for animal cages.
"Duke University
Medical Centers investment in building commissioning, which
is just a small investment over the design cost, will result in a
higher quality facility with better performance and lower operating
costs," says Naresh Khosla, EMR president. "In todays
tight budgets, commissioning offers real value that can be seen throughout
the lifetime of the facility."
Because of the buildings
low-energy-use design, EMRs commissioning activities must fall
within established energy and maintenance budgets. EMRs responsibilities
include creating the commissioning specification and commissioning
plan and developing operation and maintenance manuals and the training
program for the buildings operators. EMR is also commissioning
DUMCs Childrens Health Care Facility.
