How we use natural resources and how we preserve them are important decisions. Making the right choices for your business is critical, especially since environmental regulations are increasingly more stringent and complicated and the public's awareness of corporate environmental integrity has grown.

Rely on EMR's environmental expertise to help you assess and implement green technologies, evaluate the feasibility of energy and water management options, prepare refrigerant phase-out and replacement plans, and prevent leaking underground storage tanks from contaminating groundwater. With these and other environmental services, including creating, producing, and sending focused, targeted marketing and communications materials, EMR can help you to make educated decisions about how your business affects the environment.

American Red Cross Refrigerant Management Plan

EMR developed a refrigerant and Halon management plan for America's most respected charity to help bring the organization into compliance with Clean Air Act requirements. The plan is based on an extensive survey of regional biomedical facility and laboratory managers to determine refrigerants contained in their equipment. In addition to the refrigerant management plan, EMR created a comprehensive database for equipment containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

Fort Jackson Army Base Refrigerant Phase-Out Plan

To help the U.S. Army phase out the use of CFCs in response to the Clean Air Act, EMR engineers researched and developed plans to retrofit a cold storage facility to operate on an environmentally friendlier substitute (HFC-134a). Composed of 3 compressors and approximately 20 evaporators, this cold storage facility, located at the Fort Jackson Army base in South Carolina, serves as an example for the Army to follow when implementing conversions at other similar facilities around the country.

Corrosion of Underground Storage Tanks

EMR conducted a study for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that will help provide states and EPA regions with current, concise information to make programmatic decisions about underground storage tank corrosion and to assess whether cathodic protection is a viable option for upgrading these tanks.

Water Conservation and Management

With more than 7,000 federal buildings under its management, the U.S. General Services Administration needed a useful guidebook that would show its facility managers how to meet mandated federal energy conservation requirements. The agency turned to EMR to create the first water management book designed for government use. Water Management: A Comprehensive Approach for Facility Managers contains instructions on conducting water use surveys, choosing the best water management options, calculating life-cycle costs, and developing and implementing water management plans.

Assessment of On-Site Graywater and Combined Wastewater Treatment and Recycling Systems

EMR helped the EPA determine the potential of graywater and combined wastewater treatment and recycling systems as a demand-side management option. We explored the cost-effectiveness of available technologies, evaluated regulatory and organizational constraints that hinder the widespread adoption of these technologies, and reviewed the health and safety issues related to implementation. As a follow-up to this study, EMR created WaterManage 1, a software package that allows commercial facility owners and managers to determine whether they should install on-site graywater or combined wastewater treatment and recycling systems by examining data on their buildings, assessing costs and financing, and calculating potential water savings.

Indoor Air Quality Problems and Solutions

In one of more than 60 publications for the National Electrical Contractors Association, EMR researched and wrote a report describing indoor air quality concerns and characteristics of 'sick' buildings. This monograph identifies types of indoor air pollutants, methods for investigating and improving indoor air quality, health effects associated with pollutants, and techniques for controlling them.

Pollution Prevention Through Energy Efficiency

EMR has conducted numerous energy audits and studies on a range of buildings and facilities with the goal of preventing pollution and saving money by making a building and its systems more energy efficient. With more efficient building systems, less energy is required to operate them and fewer natural resources are used to produce this energy. EMR's work includes providing technical assistance to 19 of the 24 showcase buildings in the EPA's Energy Star Showcase Buildings program, more than 40 Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities, several U.S. embassies throughout the world, and a variety of GSA buildings in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
