Market Research

EMR researched the relative advantages and disadvantages of gas cooling systems for large commercial and industrial buildings according to load control potential, ease of operation and maintenance, operating life, energy consumption, and other technical criteria to produce the Gas Cooling Reference Manual for the American Gas Association. Then we analyzed the current and potential regional and national market for gas cooling systems. From this research, we created a manual to help gas utility marketing representatives increase market penetration for this technology.

Market Surveys

EMR has conducted a number of market research surveys to help our clients better understand their audiences. Over the years, we've examined the impact of utility deregulation on electrical contractors, the acceptance and use of intelligent building technologies, the market potential and acceptance of a variety of electrotechnologies, and the implementation of residential and commercial demand-side management programs and marketing activities.

Marketing Kits

The National Electrical Contractors Association looked to EMR to create the Total Energy Marketing Kit, which helps to identify the dimensions of the nation's energy needs and their impact on an electrical contractor's local market. The kit assesses the benefits of total energy management and its applications in the local market, identifies the electrical contractor's services as they apply to energy and load management in commercial and industrial buildings, and discusses a variety of marketing and promotional techniques.

National Program Implementation

EMR was selected to conduct a national campaign to promote the Contractor/Utility Partnership Program (CUPP) program that encourages partnerships between electric utilities and electrical contractors to perform a range of services for utility customers. As part of this campaign, EMR created the program manual, which covers opportunities for partnering and offers case studies on successful partnerships, a series of fact sheets highlighting electrotechnologies of interest to electrical utilities and their customers, and an educational marketing kit. The campaign also included national advertising in three major trade publications and an article discussing the benefits of CUPP.

Marketing and Communications Materials

As a contractor to the National Electrical Contractors Association for 27 years, EMR has produced volumes of information to help this association improve industry relations. The more than 60 Electric Design Library publications promote industry relations by educating electrical contractors about new technologies that they can recommend and install for customers, marketing approaches to promoting many of these technologies, and new markets that electrical contractors can explore to expand their services.

EMR has created an array of communications and promotional materials for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help promote their Green Lights and Energy Star Small Business pollution prevention and energy-efficiency programs. Our work includes the development of brochures, posters, articles, case studies, and an Earth Day promotional kit.

Technical Communications

EMR has had great success in producing publications that illustrate how to implement energy efficiency programs and detail the benefits of energy-saving electrotechnologies. One of EMR's most widely read publications is Water Management: A Comprehensive Approach for Facility Managers. Developed for the U.S. General Services Administration, this publication has been distributed to the managers of the agency's 7,000 facilities. The guidebook describes how to meet federal energy and water conservation requirements and contains instructions on conducting water use surveys, choosing the best water management options, calculating life-cycle costs, and developing and implementing water management plans. The publication also discusses the various technologies available for plumbing; heating, ventilating, and air conditioning; landscape irrigation; and on-site wastewater recycling.

Our ability to develop easy-to-use manuals is evidenced by the Energy Star Buildings Manual, a publication EMR helped the EPA to develop for its energy efficiency program. The manual covers lighting, building tune-up; building envelope; and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning energy efficiency options that can help a business save between 30 and 50 percent on its energy costs.
